![]() In warfare his mere presence could strike the enemy blind, deaf, and impotent. Through his powers of wisdom, poetry, and magic Odin was of much use to men. In this manner he renewed his youth, but he also became the master of the magic runes, inscriptions that could accomplish any mortal purpose, whether beneficial or baneful. ![]() He freely wounded himself with his own spear and hung himself for nine days from the cosmic tree Yggdrasil, which was shaken by winds. However, Odin chose a different, harder way. The gods were subject to aging, and they rejuvenated themselves by eating magic apples kept by the goddess Idun. Then he flew back to Asgard as an eagle, destroying Suttung in the process, and dispensed the potion to human poets. Odin then entered the dwelling as a snake, changed back into human shape, made friends with Suttung the Giant, who owned the potion, seduced the Giant's daughter, and obtained the mixture from her. Having determined to obtain the potion, Odin put himself in bondage to a Giant, whom he persuaded to blast a hole to the underground dwelling where the substance was kept. Odin also went to great lengths to acquire the art off poetry, which was contained in a magic potion that was kept in a Giant's underground caldron. He gained most from his uncle Mimir, who guarded the Well of Knowledge, but he had to sacrifice an eye to drink from the Well. Maybe if any of us end up in Asgard we’ll know one day, but until then, Thor and his fellow deities continue to baffle and inspire us. There’s still so much we don’t know about them. Authors, historians, artists, and believers have all tried to understand the truth of Thor and the other Norse gods and goddesses. Thor’s popularity is matched only by his mystery. In the original myth Thor’s special gloves are needed to lift the hammer. Marvel also decided that any worthy hero would be able to lift Mjolnir. Thor’s hair colour changed from the traditional red to blonde and Mjolnir was given the ability to make Thor fly, instead of the original flying chariot. Marvel Comics changed loads when they made Thor a superhero in 1962. These writers would often change bits of Norse myth to suit themselves. Many writers around the world have used Norse religion as inspiration, creating classics like ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘How to Train your Dragon’. So is that it, are there any other stories about Thor? It is something that has annoyed historians for centuries! The Norse didn’t write a lot about their paganism until 200 years after most people had stopped believing in it. These books, called the Eddas, were written by Norse Christians and they probably got a lot wrong about Thor and the other gods.įun Fact: Athough the Norse Religion disappeared in the Middle Ages some people have started worshipping Thor again! This modern take on the Norse faith is sometimes called Heathenry, and the people who follow it base their practices on old stories and what archaeologists have found. Was there an ancient ‘Holy Book of Thor’ that could tell us about what they believed? That would be so helpful, but there isn’t one. ![]() ![]() Does he look different to how you imagine Thor?
